On Life And Hats

A killer strolls along a bridge after claiming a hat as a prize from an unfortunate victim.

Did an idle man decide to return to an active lifestyle by dispatching a life in order to claim a coveted hat as his own?

The former hat wearing is however conspicuously non-existent. That is, he is no longer in my line of sight.  A similar hat to the one the absent man seemed to enjoy atop his head is now paraded around in front of me.  There may be other apparel that was claimed as a prize, but no other items were as distinctive.

If I encounter the deceased former hat wearer,  I will inquire as to why he chose to display such a desirable hat when he must have known the obvious consequences.   He may deflect with the seemingly fashionable bewildered glare and hasty retreat.  This is not uncommon, but I view it as a sign of guilt.  Perhaps he did not care much for this existence, and being an obvious coward, wanted to fool the world into thinking how brave he was by donning such a magnificent hat.  His ulterior motive was obviously death at the hands of someone who could not live without the hat.  Why murder and not petty theft?  I do not want to speculate on such unknowables.  That would be foolish.
